ABSTRACT

Studies have reported that children with Congenital Zika Syndrome (CZS) experience changes in their sleep patterns, which can result in mood disturbances, behavioral issues and delays in growth and development. This systematic review synthesized the available evidence on the prevalence of sleep disorders in children with CZS. Eligible studies were those with an observational design that reported sleep disorders in children with CZS using validated questionnaires, polysomnography/electroencephalographic recording or parent/caregiver reports. Searches were conducted in PubMed, Web of Science, SCOPUS and Embase, as well as a gray literature search using Google Scholar. The Freeman-Tukey double-arcsine transformation with a random-effects model was used to estimate the pooled prevalence of sleep disorders with a 95% confidence interval (CI). Five studies were included and data from 340 Brazilian children with CZS were analyzed. The overall prevalence of sleep disorders was 27.4% (95% CI 16.7-39.4), without differences among studies using validated questionnaires (29.4%, 95% CI 21.4-37.8) or report from parents and caregivers (27.4%, 95% CI 11.5-47.0). Sleep disorders are prevalent in children with CZS, impacting their development and quality of life. It is critical to examine the quality of sleep in these children to develop appropriate interventions that can mitigate these issues.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the Cymbopogon citratus essential oil and its association with chlorhexidine on cariogenic microcosm biofilm composition and acidogenicity. Minimum inhibitory and bactericide concentrations from the essential oil and chlorhexidine were determined by broth microdilution assay. Microcosms (polymicrobial) biofilms were produced on glass coverslips, using inoculum from human saliva in McBain culture medium (0.5% sucrose exposure for 6 h/day) for 3 days in 24-well plates. The biofilms were treated twice a day and their composition was evaluated by microorganism quantification. The acidogenicity was evaluated by measuring the pH of the spent culture medium in contact with the biofilm. Overall, the association of C. citratus and chlorhexidine reduced total bacterial counts and aciduric bacteria (maximum reduction of 3.55 log UFC/mL) in microcosm biofilms. This group also presented the lowest acidogenicity even when exposed to sucrose-containing medium. C. citratus essential oil increases the effect of digluconate chlorhexidine on microcosm biofilms. Based on these findings, this study can contribute to the development of new formulations that might allow for the use of mouthwashes for a shorter period, which may reduce undesirable effects and increase patient compliance to the treatment.

ABSTRACT

Skin diseases have a notable impact on the life of the affected and in their health conditions. In order to allow a more effective and economical treatment for such disorders, new therapeutic approaches have been continuously investigated. Due to its high therapeutic and phytochemical potential, Matricaria species emerges as a pleasant alternative, since it is an important source of bioactive secondary metabolites suitable for the treatment of varied skin diseases. Therefore, this review aimed to catalog inventions that have used Matricaria species as the active component for skin disease treatment in order to assess the status of the technological development of the fitomedicines. For this, a search of patents was performed in four specialized patent database, which have reported the discovery of pharmaceutical bioproducts that used Matricaria species in its composition for skin treatment. Therefore, it is possible to notice that the pharmaceutical industry has driven efforts and investment to produce medicines for the dermatopathies, using species of this genus as an active principle. Besides, a trend of growth has been identified for the last years, which is accompanied by the continuous publication of scientific articles on the subject. It is known that a long journey is traversed between the scientific findings and their applications in the pharmaceutical market, creating the perspective that new Matricaria-based medicines may reach the pharmaceutical market in the coming years.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to perform a systematic review of the literature followed by a meta-analysis about the efficacy of photodynamic therapy (PDT) on the microorganisms responsible for dental caries. The research question and the keywords were constructed according to the PICO strategy. The article search was done in Embase, Lilacs, Scielo, Medline, Scopus, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Science Direct, and Pubmed databases. Randomized clinical trials and in vitro studies were selected in the review. The study was conducted according the PRISMA guideline for systematic review. A total of 34 articles were included in the qualitative analysis and four articles were divided into two subgroups to perform the meta-analysis. Few studies have achieved an effective microbial reduction in microorganisms associated with the pathogenesis of dental caries. The results highlight that there is no consensus about the study protocols for PDT against cariogenic microorganisms, although the results showed the PDT could be a good alternative for the treatment of dental caries.

ABSTRACT

O hipotireoidismo congênito é um distúrbio endócrino caracterizado pela diminuição dos níveis séricos dos hormônio da glândula tireóide. Este afeta o metabolismo do cálcio, e, portanto, a formação dos ossos e dentes. É comum nestes pacientes anomalias de formação dentária, atraso na erupção dentária, hipodesenvolvimento do côndilo mandibular e macroglossia. Somados, estes fatores podem ainda levar a uma má-oclusão e ao desenvolvimento inadequado das funções orais. Diante do exposto, Avaliou-se através deste estudo as condições clínicas orais e promoveu-se o atendimento odontológico dos pacientes com esta disfunção endócrina vinculados ao serviço de triagem neonatal do Hospital Universitário da Universidade Federal de Sergipe. Trata-se de um projeto de extensão em que foram atendidos 205 pacientes com idade entre 01 mês e 14 anos, no período de fevereiro à novembro de 2016, os quais passaram por uma avaliação clínica e receberam orientações preventivas. A partir do exame clínico, observou-se que 20% dos pacientes apresentavam alguma necessidade de tratamento odontológico, sendo esses, agendados e encaminhados para a realização do procedimento clínico odontológico. Com os dados obtidos foi possível concluir que é essencial dar aos responsáveis e pacientes as informações necessárias para a prevenção de doenças bucais, estando elas correlacionadas ou não com o Hipotireoidismo Congênito. Além disto, a realização de tratamento clínico, preventivo e curativo nesses pacientes, agregou a Odontologia ao plano multiprofissional já existente representado pelo programa de triagem neonatal do HU ­ UFS.(AU)


Congenital hypothyroidism is an endocrine disorder characterized by a decrease in the serum levels of thyroid gland hormones. This affects the metabolism of calcium, and therefore the formation of bones and teeth. It is common on those patients dental formation anomalies, delayed dental eruption, hypo development of the mandibular condyle and macroglossia. In addition, these factors may also lead to malocclusion and inadequate development of oral functions.In view of the above, this study was chosen as oral clinical conditions and it was promoted in the dental care of patients with this endocrine dysfunction linked to the neonatal screening service of the University Hospital of the Federal University of Sergipe. It is an extension project in which 205 patients aged between 1 month and 14 years were attended, in the period of February to November of 2016, who underwent a clinical evaluation and received preventive guidance. From the clinical examination, it was observed that 20% of the patients had a need for dental treatment, and they were scheduled and sent to perform a dental procedure. With the obtained data, it was possible to conclude that it is essential to give the responsible ones and patients the necessary information for the prevention of oral diseases, being they correlated or not with Congenital Hypothyroidism. In addition, performing clinical, preventive and curative treatment in these patients, added the Dentistry to the existing multiprofessional plan represented by the neonatal screening program of the HU ­ UFS.(AU)

ABSTRACT

A microcefalia pode ser definida como uma redução significante na circunferência ocipitofrontal da cabeça. Desta forma, ela é um achado clínico e não deve ser descrita como uma doença. Suas consequências são dependentes da área cerebral afetada. Sabendo que o crescimento facial é dependente do crescimento do crânio, supõem-se que a microcefalia também possa causar deformações faciais e distúrbios em funções como fonação, mastigação e deglutição. O Hospital Universitário da Universidade Federal de Sergipe desenvolve um trabalho com bebês microcefálicos e proporciona atendimento multiprofissional para acompanhamento desses pacientes, a Odontologia foi incluída nesse grupo de trabalho a partir da iniciativa desse estudo. O presente trabalho teve como objetivo analisar as funções orais de bebês diagnosticados com microcefalia em acompanhamento no Hospital Universitário de Sergipe. Achados clínicos de importante relevância foram descritos baseados no acompanhamento destes bebês. Os resultados obtidos mostraram que as funções mais afetadas foram da deglutição, respiração, tonicidade muscular e erupção dentária. Conclui-se que devido à variabilidade e à imprevisibilidade das consequências da microcefalia, é imprescindível o acompanhamento preventivo odontológico destes casos.(AU)


Microcephaly can be defined as a significant reduction in the ocipitofrontal circumference of the head. In this way, it is a clinical finding and should not be described as a disease. Its consequences are dependent on the affected brain area. Knowing that facial growth is dependent on skull growth, it is assumed that microcephaly can also cause facial deformities and disturbances in functions such as phonation, chewing and swallowing. The University Hospital of the Federal University of Sergipe develops a work with microcephalic babies and sends multiprofessional care to follow up the patients, a dentistry was included in the work group from the initiative of the study. The present study had as objective to analyze as oral functions of babies diagnosed with microcephalus in follow-up, not Hospital Universitário de Sergipe. Clinical findings of major relevance have been reported in the follow-up of these infants. The results obtained are demonstrated as more affected functions such as swallowing, breathing, muscular tone and dental eruption. It is concluded that due to the variability and the unpredictability of the consequences of microcephaly, it is essential the dental preventive follow-up of these cases.(AU)
